We held our first party of summer last week – a night of stargazing. The party started in the evening, before the sun set. We grilled veggies and enjoyed a really great chocolate cake. When it was time to watch the stars, we laid out on our large canvas picnic cloth and looked up toward the sky. I was surprised at how little finding the actual constellations seemed to matter to anyone – it was just a fun night to be together in the gorgeous summer weather. The summer night sky is so pretty up here in the mountain dessert.
For the party details, I looked to include bright elements like a garland of festive 3D paper stars, along with a more traditional touches, and a few really great pieces purchased with my party shopping trick! The handmade table we enjoyed was definitly the centerpiece of the entire party – heavy, wooden and filled with succulents. It is my new favorite place to enjoy anything out of doors. The play list was great as well. Here are some of my favorite details from the night.
These bright lights strewn through the gated garden made the entire evening feel magical. I love that they are operated with batteries so you can literally string them anywhere!
A disco ball served our need to see the stars while we waited for the sun to set. Placed in just the right spot on the table the glare from the ball created the most gorgeous display of light stars throughout the entire space. Place one on any outdoor table this summer and watch your space instantly become magical.
The bright star garland and cake toppers are one of my favorite DIY projects of the season – see the full tutorial right here.
For place settings, black star balloons with simple white adhesive letters worked out great. The balloons were tied to small favor boxes, they were great to be taken home and enjoyed at the end of the night.
The table! We hosted the party at a little garden near my home. It has an awesome hand made table that is my new favorite place to host anything. The combination of chunky wood, succulents planted directly into the table (what a great idea!) and my newly purchased comfortable cushions made for the perfect summer party combination.
When gathering with friends outside the simple summer elements are always the most important. These Chinese yo-yo’s were a hit while we enjoyed drinks, food, and waited for the sun to set.
After dark, we used lanterns and candles to light our space gently, so we’d be sure to see as many stars as possible. The extra large picnic blanket was perfect for our viewing and the entire night seemed just magical.
