One of my creative goals for 2015 is to create more mini books - travel mini books, in particular. I have a growing list of adventures from the past year (and even a few trips from 2012 and 2013) that I really want to document, and I'm determined to work through that list this year.
I thought I'd start my mini-book making off with the shortest trip on my list, which also turned out to be my most recent one. I spent the last few days of 2014 on a road trip to Washington with my family. Since it was a brief trip, I decided to use a We R Memory Keepers 4x4 album and the coordinating page protectors. The album comes with 10 page protectors, but I bought a few extra packs since I knew I'd need more for my book. I had picked up several of these 4x4 albums earlier last year and have been excited to finally put them to use! They are a great little size which makes it easy for some quick scrapping.
Some notes on this little mini-book:
- I wanted to incorporate as much memorabilia as possible. I saved a lot of business cards, papers, and brochures that I wanted to include in my book to help tell the larger story.
- I took some instax photos during my trip (I have the instax mini 50s) and included those in my mini-book as well.
- Supplies for this book were things from my stash...lots of Studio Calico kit left overs, a couple of things I had purchased in the past, stationery, and some digitals. I used Tina's Seattle cards a few times too since they were perfect for my book.
- Simple is key. I printed all my photos at home for convenience, and used minimal embellishing because a) I wanted to actually finish this book and not push around paper for a long time & b) I wanted the pages to be relatively flat since I knew I had a lot of pages to include.
I didn't take any photos while we were shopping so in order to include that story, I simply cut up the label tags from the clothes/items I bought to fit the 2x2 slots. The awesome vellum alphas that spell 'SHOP' are these Color Theory ones and I'm pretty much in love with them. The 'lucky me' is a strip of washi tape from the Far Far Away scrapbook kit. I've kept the roll on my desk so that it is within easy reach because it's one of my faves!
The giant 'TOP POT' circle is actually from their donut treat bag and it worked perfectly as a 4x4 here. I sewed & cut an inch off one of the 4x4 page protectors to fit my 3x4 journaling card. Love how it creates a layered look too.
I cut a piece of Studio Calico patterned vellum paper to fit the 4x4 page protector and simply added one instax photo to each side, secured with washi tape. The pattern on the vellum adds a nice and subtle touch without being too distracting.
I needed more room for journaling, so I simply hole punched a shipping tag and added it into my book. I ended up doing this a lot throughout my mini.
More memorabilia, including a product tag and a postcard (that I cut down to 4x4) from Moorea Seal, a store in Seattle. I had also purchased some letterpress Seattle cards, but they were too big for this mini and I didn't want to cut them down and lose part of the image. I decided to scan and resize the postcards. Then I printed them out and added some attacher tabs (made with this attacher metal die) so I could include them in my book.
I got a piece of paper from the bookstore we visited, and I cut it down to size in order for it to fit in my book. I glued patterned paper on the back and created a little tab for this insert using Gossamer Blue/Paislee Press stickers.
I loved both sides of this Stumptown business card, so I simply stapled it to a transparency and inserted it into a 4x4 page protector. I think it looks cool when the page is flipped over and is overlayed on the photo of the cups.
I didn't take any photos at the mall again, so I cut apart a Madewell catalog, added a tag, and wrote some journaling. I also liked a Kate Spade postcard I got from their store, so even though it's a little random, I cut it to size and punched holes to include it here.
Almost done...I cut a 2x2 page protector in half since I didn't need that many slots. It creates a fun, layered effect too. The 'let's go' handlettering is from Paislee Press.
I love how the back page turned out - simple, but it encapsulates this trip perfectly.
I managed to finish this entire mini book in just over a day, which is incredibly fast for me! I'm normally a slow scrapbooker but this 4x4 size was really easy to work with and I was definitely motivated by my goal to create more mini-books. In the end, I was left with a stuffed-to-the-brim mini filled with fun memories of Seattle. Yay!
