How to Make Gorgeous Paper Ranunculi (+ 3 Ways to Use Them!)

Your first thought upon reading this title might be, what the heck are ranunculi? It’s the plural form of ranunculus, one of our favorite flowers… ever! The layered petals are delicate, loaded with color, and pack a major punch in any floral arrangement. So naturally, we decided to make them out of paper, and with sparkly stigma because, why not? We’ll also show you how to use them to make a Valentine’s Day fauxquet, a gorgeous crown, or add them to a string of party lights!

Materials:

– colorful tissue paper (we used orange, pink, magenta and white)

– glitter (we used black, and two shades of green)

Tools:

– scissors

– 24 gauge artistic wire

– wire cutters

– green washi tape

– spray adhesive

Instructions:

1. Choose a color and layer up two pieces of tissue paper on top of each other.

2. Cut a strip including both sheets. Ours were 12 to 16 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide.

3. On one side of the strip, cut arches or scallops to create petals.

4. Now the stigma. Fold a piece of wire in half and cut to the length you’d like your stem to be.

5. Use white tissue paper and cut out two squares for each stigma, approximately 3 x 3 inches.

6. Crumple one square into a ball.

7. Insert the folded end of the wire into the crumpled ball.

8. Wrap the second square over the first, then secure with a small piece of wire.

9. Take your newly crafted stigma and spray with spray adhesive.

10. Douse in glitter!

11. Now, time to wrap the petals around the stigma. Start on one end, with the scalloped edges facing up.

12. Roll the tissue paper around the stem, pinching at the bottom and slightly flaring the top out.

13. Once you’ve reached the end, use a small piece of wire to wrap around the paper.

As you can see, the materials used are pretty standard for an avid DIYer. If you can’t find gold wire, you can also use green floral wire.

First, choose a color and layer up two pieces of tissue paper on top of each other. Then, cut a strip including both sheets. Ours were 12 to 16 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide. On one side of each strip, cut arches or scallops to create petals.

Repeat until you’ve got as many strips as flowers you’d like to make.

Now it’s time to create the sparkly stigma, also known as the center of the flower. Fold a piece of wire in half and cut to the length you’d like your stem to be. Next, use white tissue paper and cut out two squares for each stigma, approximately 3 x 3 inches. Crumple one square into a ball, and insert the folded end of the wire into this ball. Wrap the second square over the first, then secure with a small piece of wire. Then, take your newly crafted stigma and spray with spray adhesive.

And there you have it! So sparkly.

How gorgeous are these? Almost as good as the real thing :) Now, we’ll show you three ways you can use them!

To create a bouquet, simply repeat the process for as many flowers as you’d like to make, then bundle with washi tape and/or ribbon.

This would make an awesome wedding fauxquet.

Next, we decided to add a few blooms to string lights.

You could also do this to create colorful illuminated garlands for a party.

Finally, a flower crown!

Measure your head and cut the wire so that it’s double thick. Secure with washi tape. Then wrap the wire stems around the wire crown. Add tissue paper leaves in between flowers, and keep going until you’re finished.

How pretty is that?
