The first day of spring is less than a week away, and we have blooms on the brain. To celebrate the changing of seasons, we’ve decided to try our hand at a gorgeous ombre arrangement dreamed up by Carly Cylinder, creative director of Calif.-based flower shop Flour LA and author of The Flower Chef: A Modern Guide to Do-It-Yourself Floral Arrangements ($20; amazon.com).

“In addition to staying within the shades of one color (pale pink to blush to hot pink), and neighboring colors (pink to red, yellow to orange, green to blue), you can do an ombre arrangement of rainbow colors or metallic colors (black to silver, gold to bronze),” writes Cylinder. “The modern pave style keeps it compact and stylish, making an eye-catching centerpiece for a dinner party.” Try making the stunning arrangement using the “recipe” below.

Ombre Flowers

Ingredients

6 to 7 bunches of various pink flowers in different shades (stock, roses, dahlias, lisianthus, spray roses, peonies)

2 blocks of floral foam

10-inch plastic rectangle dish

Design Tip

Use a metallic plastic dish instead of the standard green so if the dish is exposed, it still looks glitzy.

Directions

1. Soak the floral foam and place it in the dish, trimming the top so that it’s about even with the top of the dish.

2. Prep the flowers and cut all the stems to about 4" to 5" long.

3. Starting with the lightest pink flowers, insert them in a row along the top side of the vase (shown in the above photo).

4. Continue with the next lightest shade, adding another row directly beside the first. Do the same with the rest of the flowers, adding rows that go from light to dark, creating single or double rows of flowers depending on the size of the blooms. The order shown here, going from light to dark, is: stick, spray roses, dahlias, lisianthus, spray roses, roses, and peonies.

5. Adjust so that the flowers are all about the same height.
